Genetics:

The type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus are partly hereditary. Type 1 diabetes is known to be triggered by some (especially viral) infections, by stress or environmental exposure (exposure to certain chemicals or drugs).

However, even in those who have inherited the susceptibility, type 1 diabetes seems to need an environmental activation.

A small percentage of people with type 1 diabetes carry a mutated gene that causes Maturity Onset Diabetes Of The Young (MODY).

The inheritance pattern for type 2 diabetes is very strong.

Those with first generation relatives with type 2 have an increased risk of developing the disease, increasing with the number of those relatives. The history of diabetes mellitus is crucial for its prevalence among people.

Furthermore, obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes which is powerfully inherited. The prevalence of diabetes among obese persons leads to the major onset of the disease.

A variety of hereditary conditions may highlight diabetes, for example myotonic dystrophy and Fried Reich’s ataxia. Wolfram’s syndrome is one that first becomes an obvious symptom in childhood.

It consists of Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic atrophy, and Deafness and hence the short form DIDMOAD.
